November Through Scarlet

MG-1358

Category: Botanical Fire

November 2019

About this piece

Scarlet oak leaves spread across the foreground, their pointed lobes, small holes, and mottled surfaces illuminated from behind. Overlapping foliage and slender stems frame a pale sky and a subdued lattice of woodland branches, setting vivid color against near-monochrome depth. The close view gives November foliage a luminous, fragile presence.

The story

Early November holds its color close to the branch. Light passes through scarlet leaves, tracing each dark vein and catching the yellow flecks scattered across their surfaces. Small openings let the pale sky through; worn edges interrupt the sweep of each pointed lobe. Beyond them, trunks and bare branches recede into gray, while the nearest leaves remain bright enough to occupy the whole gaze.
