About this piece
Seen from below, a flowering tree spreads a lattice of brown branches beneath scarlet blossoms and finely divided green leaves. Sunlight passes through the foliage, intensifying its color, while small openings of blue sky punctuate the dense, edge-to-edge composition.
The story
On June 21, the canopy holds the light in countless small leaflets. The eye follows one broad branch upward until it disappears among red flowers, then finds another crossing back through shade. Between these woody curves, slivers of sky offer a cooler blue. Beneath such abundance, the world seems to narrow to leaves, blossoms, and the brightness beyond them.
