The story

November light gathers in a thin, warm strip beneath the clouds. Under the shelter, empty picnic tables line the passage, their weathered boards echoing the grain of the deck. The blue marlin hangs above the entrance, poised over water it never touches. Beyond the posts, small figures gather along the pier as pale surf spreads toward the sand.
