About this piece

Dark trunks rise through a woodland of intensely saturated red foliage, with blue sky showing through the thinning canopy. A sunburst just right of center draws the eye into the layered trees, while foreground leaves and a diagonal fallen limb anchor the composition. Deep shadows temper the brilliant color, lending the forest a still, enclosed atmosphere.

The story

November begins with scarlet leaves still clinging to the branches and others spread across the forest floor. Between the trunks, sunlight opens into a bright star, catching the edges of leaves before reaching the ground. Bare twigs trace fine lines against the blue overhead. The eye follows a fallen limb into the trees, then pauses where the light gathers.
