About this piece

Viewed from below, sculpted canyon walls sweep around an opening of blue sky and brilliantly lit orange rock. Fine striations trace the foreground's burgundy folds, while the dark overhead curve encloses the luminous center, creating a sense of shelter and monumental depth.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a narrow ribbon between folds of stone. Sunlight catches the upper rock, turning its ridges gold and orange, while the nearer walls remain plum-dark. The eye follows fine lines upward, then slips back into the shaded curves. Within this enclosed view, even the brightest light feels held.
