About this piece

Mike Gedj isolates an arching section of weathered wood, its silver-gray grain and dark fissures set against a saturated yellow wall. Rocks fill the lower opening, bringing together contrasting surfaces within a tightly framed composition.

The story

I found myself looking through the wood rather than simply at it. Its curve gathered the yellow wall and the uneven rocks into a small, unexpected frame. Moving closer, I let the surrounding place fall away until only these surfaces remained: pale grain, deep cracks, and patches of ochre. What held my attention was the contrast between the wood’s intricate wear and the broad field of color beyond it.
