About this piece

Slender pine trunks rise above a dense band of palmettos and shrubs, their warm bark contrasting with vivid green foliage. The water repeats the woodland in an inverted image, with faint ripples softening its long vertical lines.

The story

I framed the trees with almost as much room for their reflections as for the woodland itself. Along the bank, the palmettos gathered into bright fans, breaking the steady rhythm of the trunks. My eye kept moving between the bark above and its wavering likeness below. I wanted to hold that small difference: the forest standing firm, and the water offering it back with every line gently loosened.
