A wooden mill rises above a rushing stream, its weathered boards and red waterwheel framed by slender trees. The vertical composition leads from leaf-strewn foreground stones toward the building, contrasting the water’s softened movement with the firm textures of timber and rock.
The story
I framed the mill from beside the stream, letting the wet stones fill the foreground. Fallen leaves held their orange color against the rock, while the water slipped between them in pale ribbons. Above it all, the wooden building seemed to belong as much to the hillside as the trees did. I wanted the photograph to hold that contrast: the weight of things that remain, and the lightness of everything passing through.
