About this piece
Two violet water lilies stand on slender stems above a pond scattered with green and burgundy-mottled pads. Strong sunlight illuminates their layered petals and pale centers, while vertical green reflections soften the water behind them. The upright flowers interrupt the broad, horizontal leaves, lending a measured stillness to the saturated composition.
The story
In the light of early May, two blossoms hold themselves clear of the water. Violet petals gather around bright centers, above leaves patterned in lime and rust. Beneath them, unopened buds remain close to the pond’s surface. Small ripples loosen the reflections, but the flowers keep their quiet distance from one another.
