About this piece

A red locomotive occupies the lower left of a broad mountain landscape, its polished trim catching strong sunlight above rust-colored earth. A foreground tree frames the right edge, balancing the engine against layered greenery and the blue slopes beyond. Saturated color gives the scene a vivid, almost theatrical stillness.

The story

December light finds the red engine beneath a sky crowded with bright clouds. The rails draw a narrow line across stony ground, threading between dry grasses and lush leaves. Beyond them, tall, slender trees repeat their dark shapes against the folded mountain face. The locomotive offers the promise of departure, while the ridge holds the eye in place.
