About this piece

Weathered rock towers rise above a scrub-covered desert floor, with an oval boulder poised on a narrow pedestal just right of center. Strong sunlight reveals fissures and layered surfaces, while a low bank of bright clouds separates the stone silhouettes from the broad gray sky. The panoramic composition balances massive forms with open space, lending the landscape a monumental stillness.

The story

September light falls across the exposed stone, drawing each crack and ledge into relief. Low shrubs gather around the towers, their tangled branches repeating the roughness overhead. Above a slender pedestal, a great boulder seems to hold its weight in suspension. Clouds crowd the distant horizon, but the sky above remains spacious and clear. The eye returns to that narrow meeting of stone and stone, where immense weight rests on so little.
