About this piece

An empty road narrows toward a horizon of broad mesas and isolated rock towers beneath an amber sky. White edge lines and a worn yellow centerline draw the eye through the foreground, while warm light picks out roadside grasses and shrubs. The dark rock formations lend weight and stillness to the expansive composition.

The story

September light gathers along the grasses beside the asphalt. The road stretches wide at our feet, then bends until its markings disappear among the low vegetation. Beyond it, stone rises in shelves and slender columns, its shadowed faces held against gold. For a moment, the promise of distance matters less than the quiet of standing still.
