About this piece

An empty highway descends across an open desert plain toward a horizon of red rock mesas and slender buttes. Its converging white edges and broken yellow centerline anchor the expansive composition, while sunlight draws warm color from the rock beneath a broad blue sky. Sparse scrub and small roadside signs lend scale to the landscape’s imposing stillness.

The story

On this September day, the road draws a narrow line through a plain of rust, gold, and muted green. Coarse asphalt fills the foreground, then dwindles to a thread beneath the cliffs. Sunlight catches the rock faces while shadow gathers in their vertical folds. Across the wide sky, pale clouds stretch beyond the road’s promise of arrival.
