About this piece

A deeply furrowed tree trunk sweeps diagonally across the foreground, its twisting grain set against scattered scrub and distant rock formations. Strong sunlight and black-and-white tones emphasize the textures of wood, gravel, and stone, giving the expansive landscape a spare, enduring presence.

The story

September light settles across the exposed wood, picking out each ridge and hollow. The trunk bends through the frame while a leafy crown rises behind it. Beyond, low shrubs scatter across the open ground, and rock walls break the horizon into uneven intervals. The eye follows the grain outward, from the intimate roughness of wood into the wide desert sky.
