A gnarled tree anchors the rocky foreground, its sweeping crown set against a vast expanse of terraced canyon walls and distant mesas. Sunlight breaks through the branches, revealing the grain of the trunk and the rough surfaces of stone. The black-and-white composition balances this intimate detail with an open, luminous distance.
The story
September light catches between the branches, gathering into a small, brilliant star. The trunk twists upward from a narrow pocket among the rocks, its ridges alternating between brightness and shadow. Beyond it, ledges descend in long horizontal steps, their edges softening toward the horizon. A few clouds hang above the mesas. Near at hand, the tree holds every furrow clearly against that fading distance.
