Where Branches Hold Light

About this piece

A large, bare tree dominates this black-and-white landscape, its branching trunk rising above layered rock and scattered scrub. Sunlight forms a sharp starburst between the upper limbs, while a lower tree extends horizontally across the frame. The contrast between contorted wood and open, cloud-streaked sky lends the scene a austere, sculptural stillness.

The story

September light catches in the fork of a bare branch, briefly giving the dark wood a radiant center. Below, the rock opens into thin layers, their edges echoed by the ridges of bark. Scrub fills the spaces between stone and trunk, a fine tangle beneath the larger gestures of the trees. Clouds cross the open sky, soft against all these hardened lines.
