About this piece

A sequence of brick arches recedes toward a dark opening, its diminishing spans establishing a deep, nearly central perspective. Uneven light picks out worn masonry and the rough floor, while the black-and-white treatment gives the empty passage a quiet, sculptural gravity.

The story

At the beginning of January, the passage offers a rhythm without hurry. Light rests on the edges of bricks, then withdraws beneath each vaulted span. The rough ground interrupts the ordered geometry overhead with scattered fragments and shallow ridges. Arch follows arch until their separate curves gather into a single dark doorway, holding the eye at the edge of what remains unseen.
