A succession of brick arches recedes toward a dark opening, its vanishing point set right of center. Light entering from the left reveals weathered masonry and the uneven floor, while deep shadows beneath the vaults give this black-and-white composition a measured, contemplative rhythm.

The story

In the first days of January, the empty passage offers a quiet measure of beginnings: one arch, then another, then another. Light grazes the brick faces, drawing out rough edges and pale mortar. The floor carries its cracks and small rises into the distance. Ahead, the arches narrow until their separate curves gather around a pocket of darkness.
