About this piece

Seen from below, sculpted canyon walls rise in overlapping folds beneath a narrow opening of blue sky. Brilliant orange light on the upper rock contrasts with plum-colored shadows, while fine striations lead the eye through a composition both enclosed and expansive.

The story

Early September light reaches the upper walls, turning their rippled edges a fierce orange. Below, shadow gathers in folds of purple and rose. The stone seems to billow, yet every ridge holds still beneath the slender blue opening. Between the dark enclosure and the bright rim, the sky feels suddenly far away.
