A weathered tree anchors the left foreground, its branching silhouette counterbalancing three prominent buttes across an open desert plain. Strong sunlight defines the grain of exposed wood, sparse scrub, and layered rock, while the black-and-white rendering lends the expansive composition a austere stillness.
The story
September light falls sharply across the sand, finding every ridge in the weathered trunk. Bare branches reach into the open sky, their irregular lines set against the broad shoulders of distant stone. Between them lies a plain of low scrub and shallow shadows. The eye travels outward, from the intricate grain of wood to rock faces that hold their detail across the distance.
