About this piece

Gnarled trees rise from a scrub-covered desert plain, with isolated rock buttes and a distant plateau marking the horizon. Strong sunlight renders bark, foliage, and sandy ground in crisp monochrome textures, while the trees diminish across the frame beneath an expansive sky. The composition balances the weight of the nearest trunk against the openness of the distant terrain.

The story

September light settles across the scrub, drawing sharp shadows beneath the trees. The nearest trunk twists upward, its deeply ridged surface holding pockets of darkness. Beyond it, pale ground opens toward the sheer faces of the buttes. A thin gathering of clouds rests near the horizon, leaving most of the sky clear. Root and stone share the stillness, each giving the eye somewhere to pause.
