Seen from below, sculpted sandstone walls curve around an irregular opening of brilliant blue sky. Sunlight ignites the upper surfaces in orange and gold, while the sweeping foreground remains crimson and violet. Fine striations guide the eye upward, lending the enclosed composition a sense of movement and quiet grandeur.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a clear blue opening between folds of stone. Light reaches the upper walls and turns their edges gold, leaving the deeper curves in violet shadow. Thin lines run through the sandstone, following each bend like grain in wood. The eye travels upward along them, from the weight of the enclosing rock toward the brightness above.
