About this piece

Seen from below, layered sandstone walls curve around an irregular opening of vivid blue sky. Light brings the left wall into luminous orange, while deep plum shadows define the projecting forms on the right. Fine striations and sweeping edges give the enclosed composition a sense of suspended movement.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a blue ribbon held between walls of stone. Light gathers along the sandstone curves, turning their fine ridges amber and rust. Across the opening, shadow settles into violet folds. The eye follows each layered edge upward, toward the narrow brightness beyond.
