The Long Underneath

MG-1741

Category: Quiet Passages

April 2015

About this piece

Seen from beneath, a concrete bridge forms a succession of rectangular frames converging toward a distant vanishing point. Bright water flanks the shadowed structure, while the black-and-white rendering emphasizes weathered surfaces, dark waterline marks, and the fine grain of the overhead deck. Small birds resting on crossbeams interrupt the monumental geometry.

The story

April light glitters on the water beyond the bridge's shade. Beneath the deck, each concrete frame opens onto another, carrying the eye farther than it can comfortably follow. Birds occupy the narrow crossbeams, small presences among the heavy supports. Water moves around the stained bases, its shifting brightness answering the fixed rhythm overhead.
