Brilliant autumn foliage fills the foreground, its fine branches set against successive bands of wooded hills. The contrast between saturated reds and oranges and the distant lavender haze gives this expansive landscape both depth and delicacy.

The story

I looked past the nearest branches and watched the hills lose their color in the distance. Close to me, every leaf seemed distinct: orange against red, dark twigs crossing small openings of light. Farther out, whole forests softened into a single ridge, then another. I framed the trees low enough to leave room for that gradual retreat. What held me there was the difference between the vivid world within reach and the quiet one beyond it.
