The story

I paused where the fallen trunk crossed the slope, its green moss standing out against the rust-colored leaves and needles. My eye followed it through the foreground before returning to the slender trees beyond. Above, yellow leaves caught the light; below, the shrubs held their darker green. I framed the woodland around that contrast, letting the fallen tree remain prominent—a quiet part of the forest, still gathering color.
