Where October Flows

About this piece

A weathered wooden mill rises above a rocky stream, its red waterwheel framed by stone supports and thinning autumn woodland. Soft, overcast light brings out the grain of the siding and the sheen of wet boulders, while flowing water draws the eye from the leaf-strewn foreground toward the building. The vertical composition balances the mill’s solid geometry with the stream’s pale, fluid ribbons.

The story

On the last day of October, fallen leaves gather in the hollows between stones. The stream slips around the boulders, its white currents bright beneath a gray sky. Above the water, the mill’s dark boards hold warm shades of rust and brown, echoed by the broad wheel. Bare branches open more of the sky to view, and the remaining leaves lend small touches of fire to the hillside.
