About this piece

A green gecko emerges from the layered bracts of a brilliant pink-red flower, its slender head interrupting the bloom’s repeating curves. Pale edges and small yellow accents sharpen the floral pattern against a softly blurred field of green.

The story

I was drawn to the flower’s folded surfaces, each pink edge standing clear against the green beyond. Then I noticed the small head extending from behind the bloom. I held my frame around that meeting of scales and bracts, letting the flower fill the foreground. What interested me was the difference in their shapes: the generous repetition of the blossom and the narrow, watchful presence tucked into its side.
