About this piece

A heron balances on a weathered wooden piling, its wings held outward and its long bill slightly open. Warm light traces the edges of its feathers, while softly blurred dock posts repeat its upright stance against pale blue water. Positioned right of center, the bird brings a poised, sculptural presence to the waterfront.

The story

On this January day, warm light gathers along the heron's shoulders and the worn rim of its wooden perch. Its toes curl over the edge, holding steady above the water. Behind it, rows of pilings recede into soft shapes, their dark timber broken by glimpses of blue. The new year feels suspended here, between an open bill and wings not yet folded.
