About this piece

A pier stretches diagonally toward the horizon beneath towering clouds illuminated by low sunlight. Golden reflections cross the turquoise surf and wet sand, balancing the structure’s repeated supports with the sweeping curves of shore foam.

The story

I stood near the waterline, watching the foam draw a pale curve across the sand. Beyond it, the pier carried small figures toward the horizon, its dark supports breaking the gold reflected on the sea. I wanted to hold both rhythms in the frame: the measured spacing of the pilings and the restless movement of water. For a moment, the light reached from behind the clouds almost to my feet.
