About this piece

A rocky shoreline opens toward a brilliant orange horizon beneath layers of rose and charcoal cloud. Large, textured boulders anchor the foreground, while palms and waterfront buildings frame the left edge against a distant mountain ridge. Warm reflections spread across the cooler water, balancing the rugged shore with the softness of the surf.

The story

December finds this palm-lined shore beneath a sky of ember orange and dusky rose. Water gathers between the rocks, carrying fragments of brightness into their dark hollows. Beside the buildings, an open pavilion faces the sea, its shaded interior a quiet counterpoint to the glowing horizon. A wave lifts blue-green along the reef of stones, then loosens into white foam. The year nears its close as the shore repeats this small exchange of water and light.
