The story

January opens onto water bright with gold and turquoise. The brick path narrows ahead, its uneven surface giving way to a pale strip beside the fort. Small waves break the reflected walls into wavering bands of color. Beyond this enclosure, a sailboat rests near the horizon, and two birds cross the open sky. The masonry holds its lines while everything around it moves.
