About this piece

A coastal grove of palms rises from shadowed ground, its curved trunks dividing the ocean into narrow windows of blue and gold. Sunlight catches the overlapping fronds and scattered clouds, setting their intricate textures against the open water.

The story

I stood beneath the palms, looking for a space where the sun could meet the water without disappearing behind a trunk. From here, the grove became a series of openings, each holding a different piece of the horizon. Gold gathered along the clouds and reached across the sea toward the dark ground at my feet. I framed the light between those leaning trees, leaving their shadows to hold the foreground.
