About this piece

A curving line of surf leads from the shell-strewn foreground toward a slender lighthouse and palm-lined shore. Warm light catches the seaweed and water, while towering clouds bring cool blue shadows to the sky.

The story

I followed the curve of the water with my camera, letting the scattered shells and seaweed lead my eye toward the lighthouse. Each small wave drew a fresh white edge along the sand, then slipped away. What held me was the contrast: the tower standing straight and still, the shoreline continually changing beneath it. I wanted to keep both in the frame, the steady landmark and the brief shape of water touching land.
