About this piece

A low pier stretches across the composition, its repeating supports set against softly rendered water. Textured sand anchors the foreground, while broad layers of warm and cool cloud fill the sky above the bright horizon.

The story

I stood back from the water to keep the patterned sand in the frame. Beyond it, the pier drew my eye outward, past its small pools of lamplight and toward the opening in the clouds. I wanted to hold both scales together: the marks left close to shore and the broad sky beyond. The structure gave the scene a measured rhythm, while the light made its far end seem almost weightless.
