A breaking wave spans the frame, its charcoal face edged with intricate white spray beneath an expanse of turquoise water. The contrast between saturated blue and near-monochrome surf gives the fleeting crest a sculptural presence.

The story

I watched the surface gather into a dark ridge, its edge beginning to fray against the blue. My attention stayed with that narrow seam where smooth water became spray. For an instant, the crest held small arches and trailing threads before folding into foam. I made the photograph at that threshold, drawn to the weight of the wave and the delicate shapes breaking free of it.
