Mike Gedj captures a breaking wave whose amber crest contrasts with the luminous turquoise water beyond. Fine spray and dense white foam frame the darker hollow, revealing the varied textures of water in motion.

The story

I watched the water lift into a shape that would last barely a breath. Along the crest, amber gave way to white, while farther out the blue remained scattered with points of light. I framed the wave tightly, leaving out the horizon so that its changing surface could fill the image. What held my attention was the hollow beneath the breaking edge: a brief, dark space surrounded by brightness.
