Mike Gedj captures a shore break at the instant its crest fragments into spray. Across the wide frame, turquoise water, sand-colored surf, and white foam form distinct bands, with fine droplets suspended above the wave’s dark folds.
The story
I watched the water rise along the edge of the sand, its blue giving way to a deeper, earthier color as the wave curled. What held my attention was the uneven crest: already falling in one place, still lifting in another. I made the photograph as spray scattered above those folds. For that instant, the sea seemed to carry two rhythms—the quiet surface beyond and the sudden weight of water arriving at shore.
