About this piece

Mike Gedj frames a coastal bridge as a tapering line of metal supports, balanced against broad expanses of water and sky. Pale foreground rocks and a diagonal seawall anchor the composition, their rough surfaces contrasting with the softly blurred water.

The story

I found myself following two lines: the seawall close to shore and the bridge reaching farther into the distance. Between them, the water seemed to loosen every hard edge. I kept the pale rocks in the foreground, wanting something solid beneath that expanse of gray. What held my attention was the contrast between the bridge’s intricate framework and the open horizon beyond it, where there was almost nothing left for the eye to hold.
