About this piece

Mike Gedj frames a weathered wooden gristmill between the strong diagonal of a bridge and the flowing surface of a rocky stream. Rendered in black and white, the timber, stonework, and wheel retain crisp textures against water softened into silvery ribbons.

The story

I framed the mill from beside the stream, letting the bridge enter from the left and the wheel anchor the opposite bank. What held my attention was the difference between surfaces: rough stone, long courses of timber, and water that would keep no fixed shape. I gave the current time to soften in the exposure. Beneath the fine tangle of branches, the building seemed to hold its place while the stream carried the moment onward.
