About this piece

A leafless tree stands at the far right of this monochrome coastal landscape, its branching silhouette set against the open sky. Pale stones punctuate the dark, seaweed-covered shore, while softly rendered water meets a level horizon.

The story

I framed the shoreline so that its uneven edge would lead toward the solitary tree. Its bare branches held my attention, but the pale stones kept drawing my eye back to the water at my feet. Between those small, bright forms and the distant horizon, the coast seemed to unfold in layers. I wanted the photograph to hold that contrast: the shore dense with texture, the sea almost without a mark.
