A pelican perches on the yellow railing of a wooden fishing pier, while another stands on the boards near a person holding a rod. Tall lamps punctuate the expansive sky, and the pier’s diagonal lines draw the eye across softly illuminated water.

The story

I framed the pelican against the pale water, leaving room for the sky above its head. Farther along the pier, a fishing rod traced a thin diagonal through the warm color near the horizon. A second bird stood on the boards, sharing the space without ceremony. What held my attention was this ordinary company: birds, a person fishing, and the yellow railing carrying them all across the water.
