About this piece

Tall pines rise above a dense fringe of palmettos and shrubs, their reddish trunks repeated in the calm water below. Sunlight brings out the vivid greens and textured bark, while the nearly central shoreline balances the woodland against its gently wavering reflection.

The story

July light fills the spaces between the pines, touching the fans of green along the bank. At the waterline, the forest turns downward, its tall trunks extending into a second sky. Small ripples loosen their straight edges without breaking the reflection. The eye follows one trunk into the water and rests there, among the floating greens.
