The Watchful Canopy

About this piece
A hawk perches within dense, fine-leaved branches, its streaked white breast and slightly tilted head facing the viewer. Bright daylight defines the layered plumage and yellow cere, while green foliage and rounded cones frame the bird against a clear blue sky. The centered composition holds an alert presence within a richly patterned canopy.
The story
July light reaches through the branches, illuminating the pale feathers of the hawk’s breast. Fine green sprays cross its body, partly concealing the perch and the grip of its feet. Its head tips toward the viewer, a small gesture that gives the stillness an unexpected intimacy. Between the round cones and slender leaves, blue sky opens in scattered fragments.
