About this piece
Broad water-lily pads rise above a reflective pond, their upturned reddish rims enclosing luminous green surfaces. Strong sunlight emphasizes their ribbed edges, while smaller mottled leaves and white and pink blossoms gather across the foreground. The panoramic composition balances repeated circular forms with the loose, wavering reflections of surrounding foliage.
The story
May light settles into the shallow bowls of the giant lily pads. Each reddish rim holds a bright field of green apart from the darker water. Across the foreground, smaller leaves carry marbled patterns of gold, rust, and purple, with flowers opening between them. Reflections tremble beneath these floating forms, giving the pond a quiet movement of its own.
