Concrete pier supports recede through ocean surf beneath a blue, pink, and orange sky reflected on wet sand.

Where the Light Holds

About this piece

Seen from the shoreline beneath a pier, weathered concrete supports and overhead beams converge toward a distant opening. Bands of orange, gold, and pink illuminate the horizon and reflect across shallow water and wet sand. The structure’s insistent geometry contrasts with the softened surf, balancing monumental weight with luminous calm.

The story

On this October day, the horizon glows beneath the heavy span of the pier. Water gathers around the concrete legs, carrying ribbons of gold into their shade. Overhead, beams and pipes repeat into the distance; below, the surf softens every reflection. The eye travels through one narrow opening after another, while the sea remains wide on either side.
