Bare, twisting branches frame a low orange sun over calm sea, with a rocky shore and a distant boat.

Branches Hold the Light

MG-1930

Category: Tidal Light

April 2021

About this piece

A weathered shoreline tree extends its bare limbs across a golden sky, framing the sun at the sea’s horizon. The broad composition balances the intricate branches and algae-covered rocks against open water, where a distant boat offers a small counterpoint. Warm light catches the shallow pools and rippled surface, lending stillness to the rugged shore.

The story

On this first day of April, the sun rests at the edge of the water beneath a lattice of bare branches. Small pools hold fragments of the bright sky among the uneven rocks. The tree reaches outward, its pale wood set against orange light and blue-green sea. Far beyond its limbs, a boat sits small against the horizon, leaving the foreground to roots, stone, and water.
