The story

August light settles across the lake, turning its ripples yellow-green. A rowboat moves between the reflected towers, loosening their straight lines into trembling bands. Along the near bank, pink flower heads lift above broad, sunlit leaves. Beyond the trees, windows catch the light; here at the water, the afternoon takes its measure from an oar.
