The story

Late November finds a small green shoot reaching through a crowded field of purple leaves. Its tendril curves overhead, tracing an open loop against the dark. Light catches the fine hairs and folded surfaces of the new growth; beside it, a broad leaf holds a thin ribbon of red. Within this close view, the year's passage takes the quiet form of one leaf opening beside another.
