About this piece

Seen from behind, a hibiscus bloom spreads red, orange, and pale yellow petals around a sharply defined green calyx. Luminous petals fill the tightly cropped frame, while a diagonal stem and upright bud lend structure to the expansive color. The contrast between unopened bud and open flower gives this intimate study a quiet sense of anticipation.

The story

Late November finds a small green bud held beside a broad expanse of fiery petals. Light reveals fine veins in the flower, turning its folds from crimson to gold. A delicate strand of silk stretches from the bud into the surrounding color. From this reverse view, the green structures that support the bloom become as compelling as the petals themselves.
